JBC & Associates - bad check?

Hi- I know there were some posts last year, but I'm wondering if anyone can give me more information. I received a letter stating that I wrote a bad check in 1995, which I don't remember doing. JBC cannot provide me with a check number, or any proof of it. Without a check number, my old bank from 1995 cannot help me either. They said that I may be sued, etc. I live in New York State. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I honestly don't think I incurred this debt - and if I had, nine years ago, I'm sure I would have paid it! Also - my college roommate from that time said she got a similar letter - same store, different amount. She didn't even have a checking account then!
