Debt collectors not using caller i.d.

Today I was called by a collector about my wife cosigning a loan for our child. I tried to get a answer about what debt. They refused to talk to me becasue I was not on the account. corect me if I'am wrong but I would be held responsable for the debt becasue of the marriage so I should of been told what it was about. Also we have caller I.D. that the caller must enter a number if it is blocked. The number they used was not associated with the bank but a home phone number. Is this illegal or what.
