Debt Elimination Programs - Good idea or not?

I've recently been receiving a lot of emails regarding debt elimination programs that challenge loan debt (secured or unsecured) on the basis that loaning credit versus actual money on hand is illegal and if the basis for the loan is illegal, the debt is null and void and cannot be collected. These programs say they can eliminate all your debts this way and then clean up residual credit report negatives afterwards, thereby essentially wiping your slate clean within a year or so. Anyone had any experiences with these programs? Are they legit and worth the effort and/or expense? And if so, can it be done by an individual versus one of these agencies wanting thousands of dollars?
