VA has a banking commission that protects consumers and regulates the banks - you can find them on the VA state website. Give them a call and they can tell you what's what.

How did changing the check number affect anything, I'm curious. I've done e-checks for insurance and used 9999 because the person didn't have their checkbook with them and didn't know what number to use.
