Creditor Contacting Employer to Verify Employment??

Apparently a creditor is trying to verify my employment. They sent a fax to HR, asking if I worked there or not. This same creditor is sopposably sueing me for $1K, has told me a sherrifs office will come and bring me a summons (and their words, "embarass you like never before"). This same creditor claims to be from a law office in Colorado, I'm in the state of GA. They have never given me the address or been clear on the law firm they are calling from. They've not allowed me to make a reasonabable payment plan, only wanting me to give them a lump sump and then possibly payments after that, and also wanted my checking account info so they could draft $$ from my account. (I didn't give them checking info) Is it legal for them to do this? What do I do in response?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
