In Texas it is illegal to pass a bad check. It is also illegal to stop payment on a check. The banks will let you do it, but it is illegal by TX law. I happen to know this from experience. Stopped payment on a $500 check to some Shylock AC guy that ruined my Central AC (in August!) and flooded my frontroom. The DA did have the police contact me, and I explained why, so no charges were pressed pending the outcome of Small Claims court, which I won. Lesson Learned: If you stop payment on a check in TX, you better have a really good reason. Stopped payment once in KS to a lawyer that screwed up a traffic court case and had my fines doubled - I paid the court fines immediately, then called the bank to stop payment. She tried to have a lawyer/CA collect and I told them to get... Never heard another word and it didn't show up on my CR. That was a long time ago though.
