What is even more unfair is that if you file an appearance, you are automatically submitting to the jurisdiction of the court. So you have to attack jurisdiction (called a "special appearance") prior to filing an appearance. If you are unsuccessful, you have just essentially submitted to jurisdiction and have to argue your case on the merits. I could be wrong, but I think you may have to pay the filing fee even if you are making a special appearance.

Apparently Justice may be blind, but she isn't free in Illinois. :-(
