Hi, hopefully someone else will have some suggestions. The only thing I know on that subject is that if you can prove that you were insolvent at the time, then you don't have to pay. There is a form that is sent to the IRS with the 1099. Sorry, my knowledge here is very limited.
If nothing else, you have learned a lesson. CAs lie (it's routine part of their job) For future reference, Ignore CA. Most here will tell you not to even talk to them.
