I received a 1099-C from First Card for 1997. After about 4 years I received one of those Capital One/Westmorland letters. I was offered a credit card to put the balance, on it, and make payments. But the amount they wanted to collect was the 1099-C amount. I went to a pay phone and called Westmorland. I was told that the account belonged to Sherman Aquisitions and had to deal with them. I called Sherman/Alegis, and they acted like they didn't know anything about the 1099-C. Most of my conversation dealt with parrying Sherman's constant questions for my phone number--which I did not give. I finally wrote a letter to Houston and the corporate offices in New York telling them they couldn't collect. I enclosed a copy of the 1099-C. I sent everything CRRR. I received a letter from the corporate office saying that the matter would be resolved. So far, I haven't been bothered about that account.
