What do I do now?

Ok, I know that all of you old timers know the answer to this one but I have to ask anyway because this is all so confusing to me. I had an old providian debt that was last active in 1997. It had fallen off of my credit report but when I re-ran my credit today, I have a brand new collection account from Capital One showing the debt as if it is a brand new collection account. What do I do? It should have fallen off, I was so happy when I thought that it had! What is my first step?? Should I just pay it?
Any help would be so appreciated.
