For the past year or so (maybe more), I've received letters from Asset Acceptance stating that I owe Providian a debt (originally $1360, but now up to over $2300). According to my credit reports, this account was charged off in April 2001. I last paid on this account in May 1999. (Don't even get me started on how long it took for Providian to charge this off!)

I originally received the Providian card in Maryland, but moved to Virginia in 1999.

Anyway, now Asset has the account, which as far as I can tell, is outside the SOL for both Virginia and Maryland.

Earlier this month, I received a letter from the Shenendoah Legal Group in Roanoke, Virginia stating that I needed to pay them $2700 or they would go back to Asset and recommend a lawsuit.

Lovely.

I have taken no action on this matter as of yet. I am aware that an SOL letter needs to go out, but to whom? To Asset? Or the law firm? And which state do I claim? As I said, the credit card was initially received in Maryland, but I've lived in Virginia for the past five years.

How can I word it in the SOL letter that the Maryland SOL would apply to this account? It seems to me, by quoting Maryland's SOL, because I'm in Virginia now, I'd be acknowledging that this debt is in fact mine (since I'm aware of its history).
