The same thing is happening to my daughter - they are calling us and her grandparents! They asked my in-laws for info on my parents as well (both are deceased). The lazy jerks at the CA's are trying to get other people to do their job for them. They call family members and let it be known that you have a debt (openly or by implication) and then the family starts asking questions and wanting to know what's going on. They keep putting the pressure on you to pay directly or indirectly. The "mind game" is intended to isolate you from those who would support you - most people don't want their family to know how much money they owe. That makes it easier to manipulate you into agreeing to pay them (CA's) $$$.
The other thing they also do is try to talk your family into paying the debt for you. One CA came right out and asked for MY bank account info to pay my daughter's debt - even accused me of not being a loving and caring parent because I wouldn't pay the bills for her.
Tell your family what is going on - keep the lines of communication open and accept their help if you need it, but they should never feel they have to pay these people off to get some peace in their own homes. Report the violators to the FTC.
