Please take a second to check out my situation and offer any advice. I am a 22 year old recent college graduate who is planning on moving to new york city with my girlfriend soon. Unfortunately, I was taught by my parents from a young age that credit cards are inherently evil. Consequently, my parents never helped me establish credit and always discouraged me whenever I suggested getting a credit card to build credit. Now I find myself essentially creditless sans for about 8 months of cell phone bill payments (which have all been on time, thank you.) I work part-time and have only been renting at my residence for 6 months. I realize this makes me extremely unappealing to creditors. I have been denied by my bank, capitalone, lendingtree.com, and even sears. I feel as though my parents are to blame for doubting my responsibility with a card. I am very good with money, but unfortunately I might as well have been saving it in a can, not in a bank. So my question is, should I even bother at this point with trying to do anything to bolster my credit rating (ie: getting a secured card?) I will only be in Austin for a few more months. My main concern is that in order to rent a place in NY, I will probably need a decent amount of credit should we not be able to get our parents to co-sign. thanks so much!
