Did you know it is illegal for someone to look into your credit file unless you have given permission (loan application, credit app, etc.) Unless of course you already have a current line of credit with that company, in which case they may look, but it will NOT show up as an inquiry.

The OTHER case where someone can look into your credit is with "Permissable Purpose." That means they truly have reason to suspect you have a debt...such as an account going to a collections agency. However, they cannot look at your credit fir the intent of a lawsuit (seeing potential assets to determine the amount for which to sue.)

The burden of proof lies on the inquirer and you can sue in civil court for up to $2500 in damages.
