In 1997 I filed chapter 7 bankruptcy. I was young at the time, my mother felt it was a bad idea and talked to her lawyer who told her to have me not attend the hearing, have the case dismissed. I did that, received info that it was dismissed, and went on with my life. The bankruptcy is on my credit report, with nearly all of the creditors listed as "included in bankrupty" or "charged off". NOW, 7 years later, I have a collection agency trying to collect on one of those debts. I haven't heard a word in seven years and they want to collect an amount about three times the original balance, due to interest accruing. Also, the lady I talked to had all kinds of info about my case. Is this public record? If I settle this debt, what is to stop this agency from going through my list of debtors and buying all of my old accounts and trying to collect on them? I was finally getting my life back in order. I have been paying for my poor decisions for years, and now I may have to pay for them monetarily too! Any advice?
