Civil defendants who don't show up should lose, but the judge won't automatically do it. Next time, have a written motion to strike pleadings as a sanction for not appearing in court, and have an order granting your motion ready for the judge to sign, and bring a court reporter to record what happens when you ask the judge to be heard. Make sure you say the defendant isn't here and you're moving to strike their pleadings, so that the transcript clearly reflects that. If the judge still ignores you, see if the appropriate appellate court or your state's judicial disciplinary board can fix it.
