I too have been getting messages from a Gulf State Credit; however they leave a different 800# than what has been posted in this forum. The number they are leaving, by recording, is 800-523-7043. I had assumed when getting the message that it was a solicitation call. My answering machine specifically says that telemarketers are to immediately remove me from their lists so I was surprised that someone I thought was a telemarketer would have the gall to even leave a message. At that time, I didn't know if was an automated message. This weekend I was actually home when the call came in and picked up when I heard the message again to tell the person personally to buzz off -- at which point it was clear it was a recording.

So, I call the number to tell them that they are to take me off their list and the woman who answered started yelling at me. So, I hung up....thinking I'd call back and get someone else who would either comply or get me a supervisor. So, I call again and get the same woman who now starts cursing me when I ask for a supervisor. So, I hand up and call again and again.... trying to land a different representative. I came to realize though that every time I called I heard the same exact things: a recording telling me that the call could be monitored for evaluation of their customer service, follwed by the same exact segment of a recording about all lines being busy (same segment in that it was cut off part way at the same point each time), then a supposedly "live" connection sound with office background buzz and a phone ring in the background just before the same live person would actually answer. THE SAME EXACT THING EACH TIME...i.e. the whole thing -- interrupted "all lines are busy...", the same phone ring and background noise and same operator each of about a dozen times -- so it seems there was only one person on duty at this fly-by-night operation and they wanted to make themselves sound official and like a real business so they recorded all that introductory stuff and just replayed it for each caller.

Anyway, I gave up trying to get a different operator and then figured I'd had enough abuse and could play that game in reverse. I hope you all know that each time you make an 800# call that the person/business you call pays for the call. If you call from a payphone, they even pay a higher rate for the incoming call. So, after determining that my local police would do nothing and the phone company would do nothing, I decided I'd cost them a lot of money as encouragement for them to leave me alone.

So, I go down to a payphone, call and tell the B_TCH operator that I'm going to call them repeatedly to cost them money, hand up, and proceed to call, wait for her to get on the line, and hand up repeatedly. Boy was she pissed!! She did a call return and proceeded to threaten to report me to the police...I told her to go right ahead and that I'd be more than happy to talk to police about them and kept right on calling.

Anyway, I took my answering maching off line, so I don't know if they've tried to call me again. I'd like to never hear from these people again, but more than that, I'd like to see them busted...especially after reading your comments.

If we're all talking about the same company and, aside from the phone number difference, it sounds like we are, they wouldn't even tell me what their company's business was...so, I'd had no idea they were a collection agency until just a couple of minutes ago reading your posts. Like one of the other posters, I think they're not really after me. I live in an apartment and I'm guessing they're after one of the previous tenants as I should have a spotless credit report (only one late payment my entire life and never renigged on a loan/payment to anyone). But, now that I saw the ppost about them showing up on their credit report in error, I'm worried enough that I'm going to actually get a copy on my report (something I haven't done in about 4 years) just to be sure. If they're on there, man is there going to be hell to pay!!!!

I'll call every tv news show to tell them, I'll call state and national attny generals, I'll call better biz bureaus in every state, and tell the FTC like one poster suggested... I am not they type to let something like that happen and not fight like hell to obliterate them off the planet.

The first step to any of that though is getting their real address. If you all think this is the same company as in your stories and know their address, please post it here and email me at teagan@main.nc.us

Also, call them and cost them lots of money!!!..If the law won't help us, economics will. If you're worried about getting slapped with a harassment case, even though they are really the harrassers, call them from a payphone and never use the same payphone for more than one session of call-hangups. HARASS THE HARASSERS!! It's unlikely since they are the ones involved in an obviously shady business that they would involve the cops though. And like I said, this will also have the affect of costing them even more money. And write letters of complaint to any and every agency that might be able to stop them!!!
