Check out our *Credit Problems* section (the link
is at left), and read our Collection Agency FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions) page. Also check out
the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, in the
*Credit Laws* section.

The next time these people contact you, I suggest
directly telling them that you have read the FDCPA.
Also tell them that you are keeping a list of each
of their phone calls, including the time of day.
You might also wish to order them to cease contact
(it is best to do this, and any other communication
with collectors, in writing.)

One thing to find out (and get in writing) is who
is currently the owner of the debt - the original
creditor, or did they actually sell it to the
collection agency. If it still belongs to the
original creditor, and if you are interested in
paying it off, you might try to dismiss the collection
agency, and negotiate with the original creditor

Note that even if the collection agency has bought
the debt, they *are* still covered/restricted by the
Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Good Luck.
