Yes, they ARE in the letter-sending business. That
is one of the two main things that collection agencies
do (along with those phone calls.)

The person you spoke with on the phone is just a
low-level collector who just wants to run through
as many accounts as possible, as fast as possible,
with the minimum fuss and complication. They are
calling to make a demand, NOT to help you, or to
get into minute historical details, etc. So if you
show resistance, and they don't think that their
direct demands are getting a clear positive response,
then they want to stop wasting their time, and get
on with the next demand call to another debtor.

If you want clearer information, then write a letter
to the collection agency, explaining what you want.
Do NOT make any promises to pay! Just say that you
don't recognize the debt, and that you need to know
where it came from. If you don't have an address
for them, then call them up (from a payphone),
without mentioning your name or account info, and
ask.

If these people won't give you a clear explanation,
then maybe you should just tell them that, as per
the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you are
ordering them to stop their demand calls.

There is an article called the "Collection Agency
FAQ" in the "Credit Problems" section on this site,
which you should read.
