: I had a letter mailed to me by a lawyer concerning a credit card that I had when I was married. In the divorce decree my x-husband was to take care of the bill. However - I do not think that he did. The bill is 12 years old. : Should I contact the lawyer? How long an they collect on a credit card debt? Can they collect after 12 years? Will this be held against me since the card was in my name - even though he charged the total debt? What if my x won't pay it - should I pay it? If so - do I have to pay the whole thing at once or can I make payments? Check the information elsewhere on this site concerning statutes of limitations (SOL). If there's been no activity on this card in 12 years, it certainly would seem to be way past any SOL. Collection agencies sometimes buy up post-SOL debts and try to collect on them, but there's basically nothing they can do.
