It is too bad you sent the validation letter. That is usually a "red flag" to a CA that you have a reason to want to protect your credit, i.e. you have $$ they can get from you in a law suit.

You can file an answer and notice of appearance, and contest the suit. You can demand they prove every last ¢ of the claim, and show that the interest and fees were legally allowed under NY law.

You MIGHT be able to get Legal Aid to help you if your husband is disabled or receiving any benefits.
