They have to be domesticated. Domesticated means that the judgment is entered into the court where you now resides. Most states will recognize and uphold the judgments in other states but they still have to be entered and domesticated to have force. You just don't have to file another lawsuit. Now there is a handful of states and I believe New York is one of them where they won't recognize a judgment from another state if it is a DEFAULT JUDGMENT and the defendent can prove he was not properly served. He needs to go to his state Judicial Code and look for Rules of Civil Procedure and or Civil Code and look for domestication of foreign judgments and see what is entailed. I do believe that if they enter the judgment into your court, they must notify you and give you time to address it. I am not sure about that though because some states require it.
