I have debt that is from a $5000 loan I had 9-10 years ago that went into default. Long story short I had great credit, I got the loan by myself, but then I went into a depression and had no job for 3-4 months. That was my downfall which led to being in debt. Then I had to deal with the debt collection people, none of them were understanding and they would not work anything out with me. Eventually, Asset Acceptance Corp bought out the account. I tried to deal with them 5-6 years ago, but I couldn`t do it. Their tactics were typical of large collection corporations. I've mostly been ignoring their letter all of these years. I've dealt with most of my other debts. They are the one that is left to deal with. The balance is now around $2500.

Over the past 2 years or so, I`ve been getting letters from them that claim to offer a settlement for $1400 or so. I do not trust it. I know that this settlement letter has to be some ploy to contact me and find out where I live (I`ve moved a whole lot over the past 5 years.)

My career is on the upswing. I am now starting to actually make money. I want to clear my debts and I am finally in a position to start doing so. I`ve read comments on here about asset acceptance corp. Now I am considering spending my money on hiring an attorney to help me deal with this company. I absolutely do NOT want to talk with them on the phone. I would like to have all communication done in writing and do it through an attorney's office if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Does anyone have any suggestions for going about this? I am going to obtain a recent credit report from Experian, in case you want some more details of the debt.

I appreciate your help.
