This is just my two cents, but if you value your friendship you'll try to resolve this without use of a contract. It's true that a promissory note may reinforce your friend's moral obligation to pay for the damage to your car. But unless you're willing to sue him for non-performance, a promissory note isn't worth a hill of beans *and* it also sends the message that you don't trust him.

From my experiences, friends and money seldom mix well. :-( But you know your friend better than any of us, so do what you think is best.
