If you want to do a settlement, only deal with the OC. Cease and Desist the collection agency. The account will be returned to the OC, and then you can negotiate directly with the OC. Make sure you receive a 1099c for the forgiven balance. Any settlements through a CA will get you scr*wed. They are all pathological liars (many collectors are in fact mentally ill) and siphon off YOUR money into THEIR pockets. 40% of YOUR money would go directly to the CA rewarding them for doing nothing but abusing people on the phone. Don't ever pay a CA a penny. It only gives them more money to harass everyone else. Deal with the OC directly if you plan to settle and cut the collectors out of the loop.
