Some collection agencies don't report if the debtor pays them immediately when they first contact you or send you a dunning letter. They figure why trash someones credit report if there is a good reason not to. I had a collection agency send me a notice for a Discover magazine subscription that I thought I had paid but didn't and I paid them immediately and nothing was ever put on my report. Some will report anyways.

They are not obligated to report. No creditor is obligated to report but if they report it has to be accurate.
