Recieved Summons Letter Today From Cap1 What to do??HELP PLS!

Hello, my husband has two credit cards from CAP 1 and was unable to continue payments due to cut back/layoffs at work. We recieved a summons to respond to a 2,000 debt and a 10,000 debt. What can we do from here? They are only about 8mos past due, and I am not sure if i should contact CAP 1 and try and negotiate?or do i contact the law firm to negotiate? We are willing to offer a settlement, or what type of response do we need to file within our 30day period? please help asap! thanks in advance.
