What you've heard is not true. They can repo at any time if you're at all behind on the payments.

Many companies may decide not to repo if the buyer is still making substantial payments. Their logic is that most people will not make any payments at all after the item has been repo'd. Also most cars do not bring much money when sold after repo. But this is strictly their business decision, it is not required.
