The SOL for REPORTING is 7 years. since you mentioned the date of 1997 and this is 2004, you likely only have a few months to go anyway.

It might not be worth the effort to dispute, since you did not tell us your State and Type of debt, ie credit card, written instrument. So we have no way of knowing it the SOL for collection has run or no.

There is the possibility you might wake up a sleeping giant.
