Hospital Bill coming to a head

My b/f's son was 18 at the time of his accident. He has a $4,000 balance due to the hospital. They sent a request for financial information, which he filled out, and listed $0 on all assets and income. He is still living at home with his dad and is now 19.

Because of his lack of income, the account has been turned over to an attorney. He just received the mailed notice/statement from the attorney, but he hasn't been served anything yet.

My b/f is prepared to have to pay this if it is his obligation, but wants his ex-wife to come up with a portion of it. Since this was his son's and he was 18 at the time of the accident, who is liable for it? My b/f and his son have a joint checking account. His son actually listed the account on the financial statement that he sent to the hospital (ouch). We are in Utah. Can they attach this joint checking account? I doubt there's anything that will make this go away, but he's asking for help.

He would like to just walk away, considering how much he's paid them so far for this thing. What can they do to his son if he has no income and no assets? What can they do to the father since they are still in the same house?
