Was the son living with your b/f at the time of the accident? Was he a full-time student at the time? Did your b/f claim him as a dependant? If so, child support obligations (including medical needs) may not have ended when he turned 18. If he is looking for his ex-wife to contribute under a support plan, that may be the case here.

Also, if part of the medical expenses were covered by an insurance plan paid by your b/f, the hospital may look to your boyfriend as responsible for the remainder of the bill. Even if he isn't listed on the bill, he should probably protect his money by moving hit to another account now that the attorneys know his account information. They could very well get an order to freeze the account if they decide to sue.

Sorry to hear of your b/f's troubles. I have recently been through a similar incident with my son. It took 10k to pay what remained after insurance (which I had to borrow), left me without a car, and there was not one penny of assistance from my ex-husband. But at least my son lived through the experience after a *long* recovery period and should be ok. It's only money, after all.
