Boost FICO scores

I know this topic is asked about all the time but my score is 544 and I need to bring it up to 550 or better in like 2 months. There are a few derrogatories and I gave copies of letters from the CR's stating PAID and the mortgage guy said he can fax copies to the CR reporting agencies and they HAVE to up my score immediately. He said paying off my visa ($1700) would also raise my score a lot BUT that would be $1700 of my down payment money gone. Any help would be appreciated...and I can't open a credit card either in this stage of the game.
