Ouch! It looks like the statute will run in January 2005, then. Not too good. Did the letter contain the FDCPA required "mini-Miranda" that says "This is an attempt to collect a debt" and give you 30 days to dispute? If not, you may have a violation of the FDCPA. But it sounds like you should probably seek some legal advise. :-( If nothing else, start protecting your assets.
