His son was a full-time high school student at the time of his accident. He was also claimed as a dependent by his father on his taxes.
He has an order for child support from his ex-wife, of which she's never paid a dime on. Also, he was covered on his father's health insurance at the time of the accident. So, everything that MCM states seems to come into play. It's sad, but true!

It's not that my b/f can't pay, it's the principal that his ex-wife should also be liable. I have dealt with this same attorney on one of my medical bills and they are actually quite pleasant to work with. I told him to call and try to negotiate with them. Maybe split the liability and legally go after his ex for her half. It's worth a shot. Sometimes sweet-talking and negotiations will get you everywhere. I got $5,400 in medical bills written off as a charitable contribution this way. However, I jumped on it immediately after the date of service. I let them know right then that I could not pay for the accident. What could they do? Turn me away? My foot was dangling off my leg. lol

I don't feel like I screwed anyone out of anything. I offered them $5 - $10 a month and they countered with pro bono. How could I refuse? I was too much of a learning experience for my doctor. He hadn't seen anything like it. :o)
