Can an attorney REALLY help if we have no argument?

What good does it really do to hire an attorney to fight for you in court if you have no real excuse for not paying except that you fell on terribly hard times and the saints at the cc bank wouldn't work with you? Does he just look for loopholes or is hiring one just throwing MORE money down the toilet?
