I received 1099-C on debt cancelled by Discover in 2002. Last week I received a letter from a collection agency trying to collect the full amount cancelled by Discover. They won't drop this unless Discover tells them to. Discover won't drop this. I had to pay taxes on the cancelled debt and now pay the debt!
