Some companies have a policy to not accept applications for credit for 6 months after they have denied you credit. An inquiry will appear on one or more of your reports every time you apply for credit. These inquiries lower your credit score, and I believe they are exponential, meaning that 1 or 2 inquiries hardly effect your score, but 10 in a month's time will drastically effect your score and prevent you from getting any credit for about 6 months.

Most credit card companies will deny you credit if there are too many inquiries in the past 6 months. The fact that you were denied does not go on your reports, just the inquiry. Only the company you applied for will know you were denied credit, so the fact that you were granted or denied makes no difference.
