I have a FREE attorney friend; should I use him on CA?

Some say that getting an attorney into the mix is trouble and that you are better off just educating yourself and dealing with the CA's on your own.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this theory? I have an attorney who won't cost me a dime, who would be more than happy to send off letters, etc. to my CA. Should I use his services or does this open up an even bigger can of worms?
