What if I settle with an attorney/creditor and then can't make THOSE payments?

What if I make a new deal with a creditor/law firm, and then down the road I have trouble making THOSE payments? Will they just lose patience and sue? NOTE: I'm not talking about defaulting on purpose or just abandoning my responsibility. I'm talking about what if the payments are just too high. And do they usually allow payments or do they want a lump sum?

Thanks,

Heather
