Credit emergency!

Hello! I hope some of you can answer my question. I moved to Canada a year and a half ago. The move was temporary (2 years) so, instead of re-routing my credit card bills/student loans, I sent my monthly payments to someone I trusted (a close family member). It turned out that this person never paid my bills. Now, my debt on my credit card is high and my student loan payments are in default.

The reason I sent my payments to a friend, rather than directly to my lenders/credit cards, is because I was told by the credit card companys that I couldn't have a mailing address outside of the US and that I would have to pay the balance off before I left. If this helps, my cards were with Providian. With my student loan, I was told I couldn't take a deferment while outside of the country.

Anyway, I know I was stupid to trust a family member, but I am moving back to the States at the end of 2004 or the beginning of 2005. I'm tempted not to move, as here I have perfect credit and in the US it is so bad. However, I miss home. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? If it helps, I'm thinking of moving to either AZ or NM once I return to the States.

PS--I wouldn't want to contact an attorney or my lenders until I move back. I don't need them hassling me here as wages are lower than what one earns in the US.

Thanks for listening to me. I'm panicked and scared and could really use some good advice.
