OK...need some advice here

after losing my job 4 years ago, I got way behind on a few debts, credit cards, revovling credit and such, collection agencies have been sending letters, and a couple have called...now from what I have read....a CA buys the debt for a few pennies on the dollar, then tries to collect for the full amount?..am I right in this?...and even if you pay, you still have crappy credit for 7 years from the date of last activity right?....so why even pay the parasitical swine a penny....I have told all of them that have called to get bent, and since I am in NC and the SOL is 3 years on CC debt...they are SOL....right?....thanks for the advice folks
