Cell phone debt.

I received a call today from a debt collector, regarding a cell phone i hade back in 1998. I had an unpayed balance and this is the first time i have heard from this debt collect. The only previous contact was right after the phone was turned off. Can this still be reported to may credit after 5 years? It has never been reported before, and if it helps I live in missouri.
