Your last paragraph says it all. If you end up in court, they must prove by the preponderance of the evidence that this is your account. At that point, validation is whatever the judge says it is. Some require more proof than others. At a minimum, they should have a copy of the application and all monthly statements that correspond to the amount they're trying to collect.
