In my experiences this is not true. I have had many of my clients pay off collections and have seen scores increase substantially within 3-6 months after the account was settled. anywhere between 60-90 pts. If you are going to dispute it and try to get it fully off, then do that. If you are not going to, then it is more beneficial to settle it out, because this will keep your score depressed.
