Do a search for "validation" on this board.

The basic reason is that if the collection agency gets a request for validation is that they'll think you're trying to clean up your credit reports, with the purpose of buying something big like a house. This is a red flag to collection agencies which indicate you may have money. If a CA thinks/knows that you have money/assets, it increases the likelihood that they'll sue. CAs can be pretty mean, but they all seem to understand the concept that you can't get blood out of a turnip, as the saying goes. Something like 80% of all judgements go uncollected, and taking someone to court takes time and money. Not to say that it doesn't happen; obviously it does. But if you have to wait something out, lay low and out of sight; don't make yourself an easy target.
