We tried to make payment arrangements with the company that we orginally owed the debt to. Instead of taking payments, they apparently sold the account to a collection agency. The debt is 2+ years old. Naively, we also tried to make a 3 payment deal with the CA, but the guy wanted it all in within 2 days and to draft it from our account. He said, "if you can't pay me within 2 days, by bank account draft, I'll embarass you like you've never been embarassed before". After that, my husband stopped talking to him.

We are not bad people, we are not scum, we haven't tried to deceive anyone. We've had some really cruddy hands dealt to us and we haven't handled them in a way that was more positive.
In short, the company my husband worked for, shut their offices with no notice, taking with them, his 401K (15 years worth), benefits, etc. Shortly after that, our child died. My husband began working for another company, and in 6 months time, they closed all their US offices. At the time, The farthest thing from our mind was, "when am I going to sit down and pay these bills". Yes, that time did/has come but the damage has already been done. In our eyes, the very worst that could ever happen to us (death of our child) has happened...we're ashamed that we ran into debt problems, now we're just trying to figure out where to go from here...
