The simple truth why you don’t get a letter is that a letter costs 37 cents postage. An auto-dialed phone call costs less than a penny. If you don’t respond to a phone call, then you certainly aren’t going to respond to a letter.

Debt collection is a giant numbers game. They spend the fewest dollars chasing after the biggest payoffs. And they pick the “low fruit.” Intimidating phone calls out of the blue are similar to smash and grab burglaries.

Pestering phone calls are the most cost-effective method to catch people off guard, and frighten them into making poor financial decisions, such as paying a collection agency before paying for essentials. A letter is less likely to elicit a check by phone or your giving out your checking account information so they can drain your account dry.

Which is why no one should ever speak with them on the phone. It’s their turf.
