It may be perfectly true that the warrant (summons)was served insufficiently, but that's not your best affirmative defense. Most judges are only concerned that you got notice of the court date in time to make an appearance. About the only time that insufficient service of process holds sway is if the CA gets a default judgment.

HOWEVER, adding insufficient service as an affirmative defense along with another affirmative defense of an expired SOL (and anything else you can throw at them --may I suggest the kitchen sink---), and you've got something with which to clobber them good!
