I got a statement of claim

Can anyone tell me what exactly a Statement of Claim is. It has two counts, one is Contract/Open account ( the account is charged off if this helps) and two is Account States. I don't understand. We were wondering in Alabama if the company suing is required to notify us before filing a lawsuit? We are supposed to answer in 14 days, but the claim was filed on 2/27/04 and we just got this letter today delivered by a county deputy, when does the 14 days start and how do we answer this claim? Again we are planning on filing BK and just don't have the money any BK lawyers in Alabama under 500 would be great. Someone please Help!
