What is the definition of "residing" in a new state (for SOL)?

I will be in another state for a while. How soon do I have to come back to my own state before I am considered a "resident" in the new state and not just "visiting" there or temporarily staying there? Anyone know? I don't want then to reage my SOL since the state I am temporarily going to has a longer one.
